About NYC Gay Variants

This group is for unconventional gay men; those who do not identify with any particular "scene," but are interested in meeting other gay men in NYC for some good ol' fashion fun. That is, we are looking to make new friends, get together for activities that vary from playing potlucks to watching movies to playing frisbee in the park.

This group is for men interested in meeting and socializing with other men. To participate in this group the only requirement is that you are genuine. That is, attitude is strongly discouraged.

Other than that, anything and everything is fair game!

This group is in constant evolution and is what you make of it. Suggest new activities, post messages to the board, and show up to meetings. Most importantly, take some risks and put yourself out there!

What is a "gay variant"? I think that's still up for debate; however:

* If you've never been to Fire Island, and it's not exactly on your list of things that you MUST do before you die (you're sure it's nice, and you've heard it's beautiful, but you just don't really care about it)...


* If you've spent more money on comics and manga in the last year than you've spent on clothes in the last 10...


*If you have less than 5 pairs of shoes...


* If, when first you meet someone, your mind does NOT immediately go into "networking" mode ("Who are you, who do you know, and what can you do for me?")...


* If you would rather have a friend or two over to play Scrabble or Boggle than go to some crazy party where EVERYONE is going to be...


* If the handful of times you've been to a gay bar in the last ten years have either been out of curiosity or to humor friends...


* If you'd rather discuss a really cool book you discovered, or a really good movie you saw, than talk about how much money you'll be making in five years...


* If you couldn't care less when "Sex & the City" or "Queer as Folk" were cancelled, and have never seen a full episode of "American Idol", "Top Model", "Project Runway", "Queer Eye", or "Desperate Housewives" in your life...


* If you prefer 90s indie-pop and "vintage" r&b to shirtless flavors-of-the-month and tuneless "hits of the 80s" comps...


* If you've never in your life refered to anybody but a female as "she", "her", "girlfriend", "girl", "sister", or "sisterfriend"...


...then you just very well may be a gay variant!


I originally started this group as an experiment to see if there were any other people out there who were feeling a little "left out" of the visible gay culture in NYC. Seeing how quickly our numbers have grown has proven to me that we are NOT alone.

If you can see a bit of yourself in any of the statements above, this is the right group for you. We're young and learning, so we need all the help we can get in planning meetings, dinners, daytrips, bowling league, trips to the movies, whatever comes up. Spread the word to your other "gay variant" friends in the city, fill out your profile, hop on the message board, introduce yourself, tell your stories, and see you at the next event!
